Open a site as a web app

Goal. Run Gmail, Slack or a dashboard in its own window with no tabs or address bar, and treat it like a native app.

A site opened in its own window and placed with window move
aos launch Safari --wait, then aos window move Safari --zone=1B
Terminal window
aos webapp open https://mail.google.com
aos webapp open https://app.slack.com

Then manage it like any window:

Terminal window
aos window list
aos window move "Google Chrome" --zone=2B
aos window focus --title=Gmail

Plain open hands a URL or file to the default handler instead:

Terminal window
aos open https://claude.ai
aos open ~/Downloads
aos open report.pdf

Open Gmail as its own app window and put it in the top-right quarter.

  • The window belongs to the browser. window list shows it under the browser’s app name. Use --title to target it by its page title.
  • Chromeless mode needs a Chromium-based browser or Edge. On a machine without one, webapp open says so.
  • open does not wait. If you want to act on the window afterwards, use aos window wait <app>.
